Does Tuggs use buckwheat?

Tuggs ingredients and non-use of buckwheat

Short answer: no. You will not find buckwheat in any of our fresh recipes.

Buckwheat turns up in a lot of dog food, usually as an inexpensive way to bind a recipe together and add bulk. Despite the name it is not actually a grain, it is a seed (what nutritionists call a "pseudocereal"), which is why some brands lean on it to fill out a grain-free label. We have taken a different route.

What we use instead

Every Tuggs recipe (Chicken, Beef, Pork, Turkey and Cod) is built around gently cooked protein, with two whole-food carbohydrate sources doing the job buckwheat does elsewhere:

  • Sweet potato, for slow-release energy, gentle fibre and a natural source of beta-carotene.

  • Quinoa, an easily digestible seed that brings a little extra plant protein to the bowl.

We finish each recipe with real vegetables such as carrot and broccoli, rather than flours or fillers.

Why it matters

Our whole approach is to keep the ingredient list short, recognisable and made from proper food. Sweet potato and quinoa are nutrient-dense in their own right, so they earn their place rather than simply padding out the recipe. They are also naturally grain-free and tend to sit well with dogs who have sensitive tummies.

If your dog has a specific dietary need or a known intolerance, the full ingredient and allergen list for every recipe is on each product page, and our team is always happy to talk it through with you.
